Our team at Todco offers a variety of materials used in landscaping, including mulch and stone. In our experience, many people are not familiar with the variety of stones used in landscaping or the nuances between each option. To help you find the perfect stone for your unique landscape, we have put together this article to shed some light on the subject.
Keep reading to learn about a few of the different types of stone that our landscapers use.
- Pea Gravel – One of the most common stone products used in landscaping is pea gravel. This product gets its name from the size of the individual rocks, which are not much larger than peas. This is one of the finest (fine as in the opposite of coarse) types of gravel, and it is used both to create driveways and pathways, as well as to improve drainage in wet areas.
- River Rock – Another popular type of stone used in landscaping is river rock. The individual stones are larger than those in pea gravel, and they are worn smooth by the movement of the rivers and creeks where they came from. Like pea gravel, river rock can be used for drainage and pathways, as well as an alternative to mulch.
- Rip Rap – The third type of landscaping stone we’ll cover here is rip rap. This type of stone is larger (with the individual stones ranging in size from 2 to 24 inches) and rougher than either of the previous two. It is used primarily along shorelines and other wet areas to limit erosion.
