Our team at Todco has extensive experience in the landscaping industry, and we specialize in creating landscape mulch. In our experience, not everyone understands the purpose of mulch or how it is used, so we have put together this article to provide a basic overview on the matter.

Landscape Mulch 101

• Purpose of Mulch – The main purpose of landscape mulch is to retain moisture and to prevent the soil underneath from drying out. When it rains (or when you water your yard), some of the water will soak into the wood chips, and that moisture will be gradually released into the soil over time. This effect lends itself to two slightly different applications, which we cover in our next point.

• Applications of Mulch – If you are a parent, then you have probably seen examples of mulch used as a ground cover for playgrounds. Mulch is an excellent ground cover for any area where you don’t want grass or weeds to grow, as it prevents sunlight from reaching seeds in the soil, while also making sure the soil remains moist and preventing it from blowing away in the wind. The other main application of mulch is in landscaping. Landscape mulch is used in flowerbeds and around trees and shrubs to keep the soil moist, preventing the roots of the plants from drying out. Landscaping mulch can also reduce your need to water your plants, or at least give you a little more wiggle room in your maintenance schedule. Adding mulch to your flower beds also helps prevent weeds from growing, which is also great for your plants.
